Robotic Surgery
Jackson Hospital is First in the Region to Offer Robotic Surgery
One of the most innovative, effective and least invasive surgical treatment options is now available in Montgomery at Jackson Hospital. The da Vinci® S HD™ surgical system is the
latest evolution in robotics technology. It provides surgeons with an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopic surgery. It places a surgeon’s
hands at the controls of a state-of-the-art robotic system.
Using the da Vinci S HD Surgical System, the surgeon operates while seated comfortably at a console viewing a 3D image of the surgical field. The surgeon's fingers grasp the master controls below the display, with hands and wrists naturally positioned relative to his or her eyes. The system seamlessly translates the surgeon's hand, wrist and finger movements into precise, real-time movements of surgical instruments inside the patient.
Focusing on Urological and Gynecological Procedures
The da Vinci S HD Surgical System is used by highly trained surgeons at Jackson Hospital to perform a number of urological and gynecological procedures including prostatectomy, hysterectomy and myomectomy. Cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Stephen Kwan is also being trained to perform highly-specialized cardiac procedures with this amazing new system.
Unmatched Precision
Margaret Vereb, MD, of Urology Professionals of Alabama was the first surgeon in Montgomery to perform this highly specialized surgery during a prostatectomy procedure. And with the benefits she’s seen so far, she is certain it will continue to grow in popularity as word of its benefits spreads.
“With the robot system we are able to perform surgery as close as 2 inches away from the operation site, unlike traditional surgery which typically allows only contact from an arm’s length away,” said Dr. Vereb, of Urology Professionals of Alabama. “Having this close contact allows us to skim along nerves with unmatched precision.”
The da Vinci system enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions. This is good news for patients. With incisions no more than a few centimeters in diameter, patients may experience:
- Significantly less pain.
- Less blood loss.
- Less scarring.
- A shorter recovery time.
- A faster return to normal daily activities.
- In many cases, better clinical outcomes.
Close to Your Heart
The most widely used approach for treating patients with heart disease requires
the surgeon to open the chest using a 12-inch incision. According to Dr. Kwan, this is considered one of the most invasive and traumatic aspects of open-chest surgery. “Using this new robotic system, we will be able to perform more procedures using a 2- to 4-centimeter incision and having better visualization of heart structures. This is exciting news for heart patients," said Dr. Kwan.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a condition that may require surgery,
you owe it to yourself to learn about all of your medical options, including the
most effective, least invasive surgical treatments available. So if you are scheduled
for surgery in the near future, please ask your doctor about this surgical system
now offered at Jackson Hospital.
